Charles Sturt University (CSU) is a regional university with a global reach. There are many ways that we embrace a worldwide perspective, including:
- courses incorporating an international focus on their topic
- international academics bringing expertise from across the world
- our CSU Global program, which offers many overseas study opportunities
- degrees that give you the skills and knowledge to work anywhere you choose.
We also partner with learning institutions across Australia and the world to facilitate research outcomes, academic exchanges and international student opportunities.
In fact, we have a portfolio of arrangements that encompasses 126 institutions in 39 countries.
Our international links make things happen
For instance, in December 2017 CSU secured funding to enable 45 students to travel to and study in five overseas programs in Cambodia, India, Nepal and the United Kingdom.
The funding will also facilitate 12 international scholars to visit CSU in 2018 to undertake research and professional development in such diverse disciplines as animal and crop sciences, computing science, security studies, engineering, and nutritional and nursing studies. These scholars will be travelling from universities in countries as diverse as:
- New Zealand.
Dr Shevahn Telfser, Manager of CSU Global, said that such programs, “foster ongoing academic, research, and teaching and learning relations between institutions and professionals within Australia and worldwide [and] increase mobility of individual students and academics into and out of Australia, providing opportunities for Australians to be at the cutting edge of discovery and application”.
Indeed, one example of this is the recent announcement that CSU will partner with Whitireia New Zealand to run the five-year International Paramedic Anxiety Wellbeing and Stress study (IPAWS) to investigate how psychological wellbeing, job satisfaction and social support among graduate paramedics changes with occupational experience.
The five-year longitudinal, quantitative study is being led by principal investigator Dr Elizabeth Asbury.
CSU lead on the project, lecturer in paramedicine Clare Sutton, said, “This is a truly international research project with recruitment centres spread across Australasia, North America and Europe.”
An international learning experience
Our commitment to a global perspective goes beyond this and incorporates the international delivery of academic programs.
Many of our courses can be studied online, meaning students can apply from all over the world and enjoy the convenience of studying anywhere, anytime.
CSU has also partnered with educational establishments in four countries so that students can access our academic expertise while studying in their home country. We have program delivery arrangements with educators in:
- Hong Kong
- Sri Lanka.
In Cambodia, CSU partners with the Economic and Finance Institute to deliver the Master of Commerce. In China, CSU has partnered with four institutions to give local students the opportunity to study the Bachelor of Business Studies at:
- Jilin University of Finance and Economics
- Tianjin University of Commerce
- Yangzhou University
- Yunnan University of Finance and Economics.
The University of Hong Kong (SPACE) collaborates with CSU on two information studies degrees, while the Ming Hua Theological College gives access to undergraduate and postgraduate theology courses.
In Sri Lanka, CSU has partnered with the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University so local students can study border management or customs administration.
CSU’s connections span the globe and we believe that international students are a vital part of our community. Whether you choose to study with us here in Australia, via a partnership or online in your home country CSU is dedicated to providing our students with a competitive advantage and capacity for success.
Getting a little deeper
Let’s take a closer look at one example.
CSU has partnered with the University of Hong Kong’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE) to deliver two programs in information studies:
- Bachelor of Information Studies
- Master of Information Studies.
Each of these courses combines online learning with local face-to-face tutorials. Students participate in online lectures and tutorials, connecting with academics in Australia as well as student peers from many different countries around the world.
This is complemented by local tutorial groups led by teachers from SPACE. So students get the convenience of online learning, personalised learning in a physical location near to them and the benefit of learning information studies theories and systems from more than one country, leading to a global skillset that can open up a wider range of employment opportunities upon graduation.
Plus, the degree has full recognition by the Australian Library and Information Association and internationally by other library associations.
Students applying for the master’s degree can gain credit for qualifications and experience they have previously attained either in Australia or Hong Kong.
At heart, we are global
At CSU our ethos is embodied in the phrase Yindyamarra Winhanganha. It comes from the Wiradjuri language, the language of the traditional owners of the land our university sits on.
It means ‘the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in’.
We believe that knowledge – knowledge that can help people and the planet – should not be constrained by borders, and should not be prey to nationalism or parochialism. Knowledge should be shared wherever it can be put to good use. We work with students, academics and education institutions all over the world because we believe that such collaboration is the best way to generate understanding, innovation and the mutual passion to make things better.
