Starting midyear online study? Here’s your orientation guide

Online Orientation Session 2

Starting or returning to study is a big decision – especially when you’re not super familiar with the ins and outs of online study.

*Cue online orientation*

Our online orientation is a chance for you to get to know what studying online with Charles Sturt University (CSU) is really like. You’ll learn to navigate our online learning spaces, explore the different support services on offer and even brush up on your study skills before class starts.

Midyear online orientation runs between 30 June and 8 July, and offers over 70 online presentations to help you get ready for study. Once you’ve completed your orientation, you’ll know what to expect while you’re studying with us, how to use our online systems and programs, and how to connect with your classmates.

Take a moment with Insight as we break down what makes CSU’s online orientation so valuable to new students.

My orientation portal

First things first. You need a centralised point where all your important information about studying with CSU is stored – also known as your orientation hub.

Before orientation starts, we recommend you log in to your orientation portal and have a look around. You’ll find that the entire portal is personalised – just for you.

My Orientation activities

This part of the hub is designed to display the range of orientation activities available to you. Here you can build your own personalised orientation calendar, selecting from a mix of online academic, study skills, and services and support sessions.

Here are Insight’s top recommendations.

  • Online orientation workshop. Start uni with a live one-hour online workshop. You’ll find out about your online learning tools as well as our services and support to help you succeed.
  • Introduction to learning online. Make sure you’re comfortable using your online learning tools with a free Study Link subject, SSS032 Introduction to Learning Online.
  • Short courses. Check out Study Link’s short self-paced online subjects to fill knowledge gaps and build your confidence before your course starts.
  • Prepare to study. Improve your writing, referencing and assessment planning skills before you start. Join an online workshop or book a tailored appointment to make your study plan.

My services and support

This section is devoted to CSU’s range of free student support services. Studying online can seem a bit daunting at first (especially if it’s your first time), but our friendly team is always on hand with advice and guidance.

In this section, you’ll find a breakdown of each support service CSU offers, as well as a link to the relevant staff member or team to help you with your enquiry.

Whether you have a question about your course that you need answered, would like to chat to someone about your career options or need some IT assistance – there’s always someone to assist you.

My finances

Here you’ll find plenty of information on the cost of study and how to manage your money. All the information stored in this section is tailored to your enrolment, including:

  • course fees
  • fee payment options
  • key payment dates
  • scholarships and grants
  • money management tips
  • CSU financial support
  • government support.

Get social

One important thing to remember about studying online is that just because you’re studying online, doesn’t mean you’re studying alone.

Studying online with CSU means you’re offered every opportunity to connect with your fellow classmates – even if you’re on opposite sides of the world!

Explore the My uni life section of the orientation hub and connect with your classmates and other students studying online. We think you’ll find CSU’s vibrant community spirit is reflected in these groups.

Another way for to you connect with others in the CSU community is to get involved with the Student Representative Committee (SRC). There are specific roles for online students, so it’s a chance for you to connect with the CSU community and make the online study experience even better for other students.

And don’t forget – if you live near one of our on-campus locations, you’re more than welcome to join in any on-campus orientation activities of interest to you.
